The Most Effective Ways To Score In English Exams

Don’t Memorise Essays

The best tip I can give you is, don’t go down the road of so many others and memorise whole essays. Over the two exams you’ll have four essays and one short story to write, and it’s just too much to try and remember. For those with a fantastic ability to memorise, maybe that’s a good plan, but the majority of us can’t retain that much information word-for-word.

Do Memorise Quotes

What you can try and learn is everything you’ll need for your essays. You need to have a library of handy quotes on hand, preferably things that will work with any question they can throw at you. The best thing to do is to learn these, and any other information you might need.

Make a Plan

When you get into the exams, the first thing you should do is write down all of your quotes. Then you can look at the question, and start to plan out how you will structure your essay. Remember, a detailed plan is important – don’t just launch straight in. You need to structure your argument and know what you’re going to say. And if worst comes to worst, if you run out of time, submitting the dot points of your plan will score you more marks than submitting nothing at all.

Pick Texts you Like

Paper 1 should be all of the texts you’re most familiar with – the ones you started earliest, and your related texts. Pick texts that you can discuss in detail and are really familiar with – it often helps if you really like them as well. Don’t worry that you’ll start to dislike them if you have to write too much about them. If you like them enough, it shouldn’t matter!

Creative Writing – Embrace the Freedom!

A lot of my friends stressed out about the short story in Paper 1. The problem with writing a story and memorising it is that sometimes, the stimulus they give you for creative writing just will not fit with the story you’d already written. My best advice for this is to write quite an open-ended story, with room for movement in the plot. The stimulus is always something different, so leave room for objects, images, and ideas. And stay away from cliches!

Keep Track of Time

Paper 2 is just about managing your time. Make sure you divide it equally and don’t go over time. If you can’t finish something, come back to it later. If you get stuck, start on the next essay. Paper 2 is where you really need to spend a few minutes at the start of the exam preparing all of your essays, and writing your quotes down before you forget them, as well as your main points.

Stay Cool

Hopefully this has been at least a little helpful! Remember, the best way to deal with the HSC is just to not freak out. If you get a question you weren’t expecting or if your short story just wont fit, don’t stress. Stay calm. You can find a way to make it work. Be positive. Some day this will all just be a distant memory. To be honest, I cant even remember what I wrote for my creative piece. Not a clue. Ah, forgetting the details. You have that to look forward to!

"We know that every child is different and performs differently at home and in schools. The children differ in their behaviour, learning and grasping power. The performance of every child is different and it cannot be compared with one another. Some students are very brilliant and some need extra attention and care so that they are able to show their performances. Private Home tuition has become necessary for every student; as a brilliant student has to compete with other students and keep the pace of getting good scores while weak students have to struggle for getting good marks. There are various benefits of home tuition for both students and parents. Some of them are listed below: Extra attention: The students are able to get care and attention from their teacher which may be the lacking point in their traditional class rooms. Private tuition is helpful in imparting the knowledge and interest in the student and they are able to get maximum benefits from home tuition. Improve learning styles: The students are able to explore new learning style and they are able to change the way they study in the classroom. Home tuition will help them build confidence and hence speed up their learning process. This is very important for student to discover the most effective way for learning so that they are able to excel in their studies and career in life. Improved Performance: Sometimes the student is afraid of one subject or maybe even more. With the help of home tuition, he is able to concentrate more on that subject. Private tuition will give the students opportunity to practice more and more. It is advised that the student must take full advantage of home tuition and try various exercises so that he is able to improve upon his weakest areas."

Why English Tuition is Important

"Grades slipping in English exams"

"SINGAPORE - Pupils who took the Primary School Leaving Examination last year recorded the worst performance in English language in a decade.

A 10-year education-performance trend released by the Ministry of Education yesterday showed that the percentage of pupils who scored A*, A, B and C fell from 97.9 in 2007 and 97.7 in 2011 to 97 last year. The fall was seen among all races.

This despite 60 per cent of the Primary 1 cohort now coming from English-speaking homes.

The percentage of pupils who scored A* to C for Mother Tongue remained consistent in recent years, at 97.4 last year, and 97.5 in 2011 and 2010. But it fell from the 98.1 per cent a decade ago."

"Indians seeing importance of learning Chinese"- Chinese Tuition in Singapore

Chinese language tuition in Singapore – NIE trained Tutor for Primary, Secondary and NIE trained Experience Bilingual tutor for Working Adults

A lot of the people I have met always talk about how they were unable to understand what their Chinese language teacher or tutor is teaching them as they were TOO FOCUSED on getting the technical part of Mandarin into the students. While there is nothing wrong with it, we believe strongly that instilling interest and making learning EASY for learners are more important than anything else.

Many people find Mandarin difficult as it can be confusing with 4 phonetics and most importantly, the characters do not look anything like the alphabets we are used to. As such, picking up this language has been a chore for many people out there.

Having personally and successfully helped many people love and enjoy learning Mandarin as a language, I realised it takes more than knowing the language. It takes passion and the ability to relate the art of mandarin through English to the students.

The tutor specialised in teaching Mandarin at all levels, be it:

1. Students who need to score for exam
2. Working adults who might need to converse in Chinese language at times at the workplace or simply out of interest

Our teacher is bilingual, NIE trained with 10 years of teaching experience. Need help in your Chinese? Do not hesitate to contact us:

Importance of Mathematics in Everyday Life

Mathematics are important in our daily lives. People use a lot of what they were taught in school without even thinking much about it.

Area

Retiling a floor or seeding a lawn may be done by figuring the size of the area and amount of supplies needed.
Percentages

Being able to figure out percentages can come in handy when faced with store sales or nutrition labels.
Fractions

Road signs and recipe books feature fractions that tell us the distance to our destination or how much of an ingredient to put in a dish.
Addition and Subtraction

Totaling the prices of groceries as you shop or calculating monthly bills requires mathematical skills.
Geometry

Placing pictures on a wall and making certain they are hanging straight takes some knowledge of geometry.
Playing the Odds

Some people who play the lottery use mathematical skills to try to determine the probability of their winning the jackpot.

Projects & Homework: Get It Done and Over With

Procrastination is mental hindrance obstructing your success. Block out diversions and stay on errand with these strategies.

1. Power up your progress by reading: Reading opens the doors to 'ahamoments' and divine ideas that will motivate you to take action. Pencil in reading time daily. Reading enlightens you and makes you better prepared to finish projects.

2. Master your momentum: Shield yourself from distractions by silencing your phone and closing your office door to lock yourself into a work-inspired space. Gather all of your snacks and everything you need before you get started so there's no need to stop. Then focus to finish your project.

3. Small changes yield big impact: Progress happens little by little. Don't allow yourself to be overwhelmed by tackling a big project all at once. Break it down into steps and start with number one and work your way down the list.

4. Hone new habits for productivity: Get up 20 minutes earlier to think and plan. Start using a kitchen timer to get more done in less time. The ticking clock will remind you to work expeditiously and stay focused. Write in your journal daily to record your thoughts, ideas and plans. All of these success habits will help you perform better throughout your day.

5. Get fixated on fast action: When you learn something new, plan to implement it right away. The faster you take action, the more likely you are to commit to the change and succeed. Challenge yourself to reach daily action goals. You can use my 5x5 principle, five goals with five action requirements, to get a lot done in a short time.

6. Do the Worst Thing First: Attack the hardest task when your energy is fresh and you give yourself the strongest chance of success. Doing otherwise can have a damaging domino effect.

7. Start Your Day Over at 2 p.m: Combat this by implementing a reboot: “At 2 p.m. every day, assess how much you’ve accomplished, remind yourself of what’s critical, and alter your plan so you can tackle the most important thing,” says Wisnik. In other words, grant yourself a second morning in the middle of the day (complete with your caffeinated beverage of choice). And if there’s a new project that has become high priority, you still have the time and the energy to start it at 2 p.m.

8. Create an Audience: It’s easy to blow things off when your commitment to yourself is the only thing at stake. But make yourself accountable to a friend and suddenly potential embarrassment becomes a powerful motivator. Ask a friend to check in and crack the whip at an appointed time. Then let the fear of disappointment work its dark magic.

9. Race the Clock: Having trouble even beginning a burdensome project? Try the old trick of setting a timer for 10 minutes. Work in a focused, perhaps even frantic manner for that short stretch, and watch what happens. “You may get engrossed and end up working even longer.” Once a sense of satisfaction replaces the dread you felt before, there’s a decent chance you’ll continue."
